Amazon launches Kindle application for the iPhone

Although the Kindle app for the iPhone won’t turn turn your iPhone display into an Kindle-esque device along with an e-Ink screen; it is a great tool for boosting the visibility of the Kindle and it’s seriousness to bring e-Books to the mainstream.

There appears to be usability-based barriers to using the Kindle app but it would be interesting to see how much effort they push onto the iPhone and iPod.

Buying new books is a bit more tedious for iPhone users, as Apple doesn’t allow third parties to sell content within their applications. To get a new book, you’ve got to pop into Safari, then head to the standard Amazon Kindle store and purchase the book there. Amazon’s syncing sorcery takes over from that point. It’s not too bad, but the experience isn’t as seamless as it is on the Kindle.
