Does gender of an author make a difference?

I have always been interested in why some authors publish books with their initials, rather than with their full name and this writer has writen their opinions about the matter.

but Joanne Rowling is, after all, still calling herself JK.
Perhaps we should force all authors to be known by their initials alone so we can’t tell what gender they are – maybe that way things would be more equal.

Is there an advantage in selling books, depending on the gender?
